greatest players in football history, have officially announced the creation of their own football club: Deportivo LSM. This ambitious, human-focused, and forward-looking project will start in the 4th tier of Uruguayan football (División D), but clearly aims much higher.
🛠️ A Project Born from Friendship and Passion
Deportivo LSM stands for Luis Suárez Messi, a fitting name given the strong friendship between the two legends since their golden years at FC Barcelona. The project began with Suárez back in 2018, when he founded Deportivo LS to promote sports among youth. In May 2025, Messi officially joined the initiative, and the club was renamed Deportivo LSM.
“We want to give back to football everything it gave us, by helping young players and building a project based on human values above all,” Messi and Suárez stated jointly.
📍 A Solid Base in Uruguay
Deportivo LSM is based in Ciudad de la Costa, in the department of Canelones, near Montevideo. The club already has quality infrastructure in place with the “Complejo LS”, a modern training facility with multiple pitches, locker rooms, and meeting spaces.
But this is just the beginning: a larger project is underway to build a full “Ciudad Deportiva LS”, a top-level sports complex that will include:
- A full-size football stadium (11-a-side)
- 7-a-side and 5-a-side football pitches
- Hockey, basketball, and volleyball courts
- A multi-sport hall
- Administrative offices
- Youth and family-friendly spaces
👥 A Professional and Purpose-Driven Structure
The club is officially recognized as a Sports Anonymous Corporation (SAD) by the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), and already has over 4,000 active members.
Two iconic figures of Uruguayan football are part of the project:
- Álvaro Recoba, a Nacional and Inter Milan legend, is expected to take the role of head coach.
- Sebastián Taramasco, former sporting director at Defensor Sporting, has been confirmed as sporting director.
🎯 Sporting Ambition… and Social Purpose
While Deportivo LSM is starting from the bottom, its goals are crystal clear: develop local talent, provide opportunities for youth from underserved communities, and climb the football ladder step by step.
But beyond the pitch, Messi and Suárez aim to make a strong social impact, by creating hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, promoting education through sport, and fostering inclusion.
“We’re not just building a club to win matches. We’re building a community.” – Luis Suárez
🔮 What’s Next?
The world is watching this new club closely. Even though Deportivo LSM starts modestly, it benefits from an exceptional network, football expertise, and global visibility. The first matches in Uruguay’s 4th division will kick off this year, and fans are already showing support.
📸 A Project That Could Inspire All of Latin America
At a time when many former players invest in clubs in Europe or the U.S., Messi and Suárez are choosing to return to their roots with a project that’s authentic, educational, and dedicated to their people. Deportivo LSM could very well become a model for the future of football: more human, more responsible, and still just as passionate.
Welcome to Deportivo LSM. Let the adventure begin!
