Gianluigi Donnarumma, the towering Italian who arrived in Paris crowned as a European champion in 2021, may have played his final matches in the colours of Paris Saint-Germain. What was supposed to be a long and fruitful partnership now appears to be heading for an abrupt end — the product of sporting decisions, financial calculations, and internal rivalries.

The Shadow of Lucas Chevalier

If Donnarumma’s situation has suddenly turned sour, much of it stems from the arrival of Lucas Chevalier. The young French goalkeeper, signed on a five-year deal, is clearly not here to warm the bench: all signs point to him becoming Luis Enrique’s new first-choice keeper. The clearest signal came this week when Donnarumma was left out of the squad for the UEFA Super Cup — an omission that looks less like squad rotation and more like a warning.

Inside the Parc des Princes, there is already talk of a “passing of the torch” or even a “complete rupture” between club and player. All this comes just a year before Euro 2026, where Donnarumma remains the natural choice for the Azzurri.

Contract Talks Deadlocked

With his contract running until 2026, Donnarumma and his entourage have so far rejected PSG’s revised terms. Luis Campos’s new wage model — lower fixed salary but bolstered by performance-related bonuses — has found no favour with the Donnarumma camp. Talks have stalled, and each passing day adds weight to the idea of a departure.

His agent has played it safe in public, insisting it is “too early to talk about the future”. Behind closed doors, however, the door is wide open — whether that means a return to Serie A or a move to another European powerhouse.

Big Names in the Queue

Manchester United, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and even Galatasaray are all monitoring the situation closely. For a goalkeeper still only 26 and with vast international experience, opportunities like this do not come often. According to several sources close to the club, a move this summer is now “100% likely” unless a renewal is signed.

A Relationship Worn Down by Disappointment

Donnarumma was once seen as a cornerstone of PSG’s project, capable of holding the line in the biggest games. But some supporters have never forgiven costly Champions League errors, especially in matches where PSG’s European ambitions were on the line. In Paris, patience is a scarce commodity — even for the biggest names.

Others, however, lament this likely ending, pointing to his calm presence and world-class reflexes. For them, PSG risk losing a keeper still very much in his prime.

The Beginning of the End

At a club obsessed with clearing the final hurdle in Europe, every move is calculated. Donnarumma’s exclusion from key summer fixtures feels like a statement of intent. Unless there is a dramatic U-turn, the Italian giant will be gone before the transfer window shuts — or at the latest, by next summer.

For both PSG and Donnarumma, the page may already have been turned. The only question left is: who will write the next chapter?
