Atalanta Bergamo have secured their place in the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League after a crucial 2–1 victory over AS Roma on Sunday night. The win cements their position in the top four of Serie A with two matches remaining, marking a major achievement for Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad.
The match started at a high tempo, with Atalanta quickly taking control. Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman opened the scoring in the 9th minute, slotting home his 15th Serie A goal of the season. Roma responded with determination, and Bryan Cristante equalized before halftime, reviving the hopes of the Giallorossi.
But Atalanta didn’t back down. In the 76th minute, substitute Ibrahim Sulemana became the hero of the evening by netting the decisive goal that sent the Gewiss Stadium into euphoria.
With this victory, Atalanta move to third place in the Serie A standings with 71 points — seven behind Juventus and comfortably ahead of Lazio. Their qualification for the Champions League marks the club’s fifth appearance in Europe’s most prestigious competition since their first entry in 2019.
This season has been a rollercoaster for the Bergamaschi, who started with 11 consecutive wins and led the table in December, before facing a dip in form. However, Gasperini’s men have shown resilience and tactical discipline to finish strong.
Speaking after the match, coach Gian Piero Gasperini praised his team’s consistency and spirit: “Securing a Champions League spot in a league as competitive as Serie A is never easy. I’m proud of what this group has accomplished.”
With two league matches left to play — against Genoa and Parma — Atalanta can now prepare calmly for both the end of the domestic season and a new European campaign.
