Taiwo Awoniyi Placed in Induced Coma After Emergency Abdominal Surgery

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi, 27, has been placed in an induced coma following emergency surgery for a serious abdominal injury. The incident occurred during the 2-2 draw against Leicester City last Sunday, when Awoniyi collided with the goalpost.

Although he received immediate treatment and initially tried to continue playing, he was later substituted. Medical scans revealed a life-threatening injury that required urgent surgery on Monday.

After the procedure—which was initially reported as successful—doctors decided to place him in an induced coma to allow his body to recover more effectively. According to the club, Awoniyi is responding well so far, though the situation remains serious.

🏥 A History of Health Setbacks

This isn’t Awoniyi’s first serious health scare. In June 2020, while playing for Mainz in the Bundesliga, he suffered a severe concussion during a match against Augsburg, which led to hospitalisation.

More recently, in January 2023, a groin injury sidelined him for several weeks and caused him to miss 13 matches for Nottingham Forest.

🤝 Support From the Football World

The football community has been rallying around Awoniyi. Nottingham Forest released an official statement confirming the surgery and reassuring fans of his current condition.

Reports have mentioned tensions between club owner Evangelos Marinakis and coach Nuno Espírito Santo regarding the decision to keep Awoniyi on the pitch after his initial injury. However, the club has denied any dispute, stating that Marinakis’s reaction was driven by genuine concern for the player’s well-being.

🇳🇬 A Beloved Figure On and Off the Pitch

A proud Nigerian international, Taiwo Awoniyi is widely admired not only for his talent but for his character and community involvement. He recently participated in outreach events in Nottingham, strengthening ties between the club and local residents.

🙏 Our thoughts are with Taiwo Awoniyi, his family, and loved ones during this difficult time. We stand in hope for a full and swift recovery for this courageous and respected player.
